Parents – Choosing a Primary School in Nigeria

school

Primary Education in Nigeria is a task every parent with children must go through. This can be daunting because The Ministry of Education is not effective and efficient as should be. Choosing the right school for your child through the MoE is a waste of time.

The following tips will make your quest easier!

  1. School’s Philosophy & Values – What does the school believe education should be, and how does it plan to fulfil its philosophy? Is education rote learning, memorising fact and winning competitions? Or is education developing the whole child to learn, analyse, understand and apply understanding to real life situations. How are the school values entrenched in school life?
  1. School’s curriculum – What curriculum is being used in teaching? England’s, Canada, America, Nigeria, etc. When thinking of this, think of the secondary school you would like your child to attend.
  1. Learning Support – You need to know if there is a structure to support struggling child, and how does the structure work?
  1. School Environment & Culture – When you walk into the gate, use your senses, what can you see? Are the children happy, do the teachers look happy and engaged? Is the environment neat, warm and welcoming? Can you sense the culture of the school?
  1. Age of the school – Sometimes the age of the school could spell good experience, or lack of care and interest, so be careful. A 10-year-old school that is managed properly may be better than a 30-year-old school that is run down!
  1. Teachers Experience & How often are teacher trained – Ask about the lowest education level of teaching staff, also, if you go around the school with the head of school, talk to teachers, ask them questions and listen to their replies and body language.
  1. Size Class – Pupil to Teacher should be considered, an overcrowded class would affect learning.
  1. Fees & Hidden Cost – When talking fees, ensure you find out if there are other hidden cost; such as excursion fees, that would come up during the year.
  1. Technology Integration & E-Learning Experience & Skills – 21st Century Digital learning and collaborative skills is a must. Are the teachers experienced with using technology in teaching and managing children’s learning in school and remotely? What platforms does the school use in achieving e-learning?
  2. Facilities of the School – What is important to you concerning a school’s facility?
